Kamarina, an ancient Doric settlement, exported the famous "Mesopotamium" wine produced between the Ippari and the Dirillo rivers, the traves of which are visible in the coinage of Kamarina and in the findings of the Pompeii excavations.

Vittoria Colonna, the widow of the Earl of Modica, the cousin of the King of Spain, obtained the license to build a new city, "Riedificetur Kamarina", which in 1607 was founded with the name of Vittoria. The Founding of the city increased the importance of the territory and the economy of the ancient earldom of Modica, bringing benefits to the earldom with the production of wine, stimulated by Vittoria Colonna who granted privileges to all those who planted vineyard.

The wine quickly conquered the Italian, French, English and German markets. It was exported with sailing ships form the loading docks at Scoglitti, the mercantile seaport of Vittoria. It was marketed under the name Scoglitti and the name Vittoria, and was famous because it endured navigation by boat and for its red foam and perfume.
